Organize a Fall Litter Cleanup in Your Community

Volunteers at a community cleanup in Kickapoo Woods.

Fall preparation for the coming cooler months presents a great time to lead a litter cleanup in your neighborhood with the tools provided by our Litter Free Supply Station network. To support and empower local residents, these year-round supply stations contain all of the tools that action-oriented neighbors need to run a safe and successful community cleanup.

Supply Stations can be found in community hubs across the watershed, with 15 host stations active and available for use right now. Each station provides all of the tools necessary to run safe and successful cleanups, including a copy of our easy-to-use  in English and Spanish. Building on Friends’ years of cleanup coordination, the Toolkit provides expert guidance on planning your own fun and impactful litter cleanup. The free Toolkit details the essential coordination steps, from how to select your site and prepare your volunteers to event day activities.

More than 400 community members have utilized the supply kit this year at over 30 cleanup events. The supply stations are part of our Litter Free Chicago-Calumet River initiative that works to reduce the amount of trash harming our waterways by working with community and government leaders to develop strong public policy and comprehensive litter reduction programs. This multi-pronged approach includes litter research and engaging residents and companies in local cleanup efforts to keep our rivers clean and healthy for all.
