River Plantings

Help with wildlife habitat

Volunteers with 第一吃瓜 and Shedd Aquarium install two aquatic plants species along the North Shore Channel and the Little Calumet River in the summer at events called Paddle and Plants.

Locally grown lizard’s tail and water willow are planted to increase instream habitat for local fish species. As the colonies of plants grow, they also help in the reduction of bank erosion and improve aesthetics of the waterways.

This is a unique opportunity to wear waders, head out in canoes, park along the banks of the waterway, and install these plants. Check our page for summer volunteer opportunities with this ongoing habitat effort.
